Arrowhead Elementary School was thrilled to welcome Dr. Robert Prezant, president of Farmingdale State College and a distinguished marine biologist, for an exciting, hands-on learning experience with the fifth grade students on March 21. Dr. Prezant’s visit was part of the Visiting Scholars program, bringing real-world scientific expertise into the classroom.

Dr. Prezant introduced students to the fascinating world of marine life, showcasing preserved ocean specimens. Fifth graders handled specimens such as octopuses, baby sharks, sea worms and even deep-sea creatures like giant pill bugs and cowfish – all while learning about the vast biodiversity found in the world’s oceans. Safety gloves were provided to ensure a secure and interactive experience.

This visit built upon the students’ prior studies of ecosystems, reinforcing their understanding of marine environments and the intricate relationships between ocean species. By engaging directly with these specimens, students gained a greater appreciation for marine life and the importance of conservation efforts.

Arrowhead Elementary was grateful for the opportunity to host Dr. Prezant and looks forward to continuing to inspire young minds with the wonders of marine biology. The school also extended its appreciation to the Faculty Center and its director, Jennifer Jaiswal, for supporting this enriching educational experience. The event highlighted Arrowhead’s commitment to bringing innovative learning opportunities to its students and fostering curiosity about the natural world.
