This course offers students an immersive exploration of Atlanta’s dynamic fashion ecosystem, blending design innovation and supply chain strategies.

How will studying in Atlanta help your career development?

Through hands-on experiences and direct engagement with industry professionals, students will learn the history of fashion and textiles in the South and examine how it has shaped contemporary design, entrepreneurship and business practices in Atlanta and the southeast. Students will gain insights into the region’s unique role in the evolution of fashion, focusing on themes like Southern craftsmanship, cultural heritage and entrepreneurship. They will critically analyze the intersection of fashion with technology, culture and business, and develop a forward-thinking mindset that positions design as a driving force of creative and cultural transformation within the city’s evolving fashion landscape.

Course Description: 45392-Atlanta Study Tour

Over the course of three weeks (online-remote-synchronous), students will explore Atlanta's emergence as a global center for fashion design and supply chain innovation. In the first two weeks, we will conduct in-depth research on key fashion companies, institutions, and cultural landmarks in Atlanta, exploring the city's unique role in shaping fashion trends and production practices. Lectures will focus on the intersection of design, culture, and history, examining how Atlanta's creative scene influences and is influenced by the city’s diverse and evolving fashion industry.

Throughout the online component, students will engage virtually with leading professionals from Atlanta’s fashion industry, national brands, local artists, and fashion entrepreneurs. Students will critically analyze the impact of current consumption trends and sustainability efforts on Atlanta's fashion sector.

In the final week, students will travel to Atlanta for an 8-day, 7-night immersive study tour, where they will visit key cultural and fashion industry sites. This in-person experience will deepen their understanding of Atlanta's fashion scene and provide a firsthand look at the city’s vibrant blend of history, creativity, and innovation in the fashion world.  Led by Drs. Lauren Copeland and Laura McAndrews.
